Holographic Enhancement Module

The holographic enhancement module is a device that was used to keep a holoprogram running continuously withouth the need for a holodeck.  It was developed to allow a sentient hologram, derived from the fictional character of Professor Moriarty, to live a full existence with his consort, Countess Regina Barthalomew.

The sentient Moriarty program was created accidently when Geordi La Forge instructed the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D's computers to create a rival who was the equal of the android Lt. Commander Data.  Extraordinarily, the character the computer created achieved sentience and became aware of its holographic nature.

The Moriary program was deactivated shortly after it was created, but somehow remained self-aware in the main computer's circuitry.  When the original program was reactivated by a curious Reg Barclay, Moriarty assumed control of the Enterprise and demanded that the crew find a way of allowing him and the Countess Regina to leave the holodeck.  Since 24th century technology is not capable of maintaining a holographic character outside a holodeck, the crew were forced to develop an alternative solution.  They reprogrammed the simulation Moriarty was in so that he believed he had left the holodeck; his program was then transferred to an isolinear storage cube which was plugged into an enhancement module so that it could run continuously.  The storage cube consists of a series of isolinear chips arranged in a stack and encased in a transparent, rectangular box.  The cube has enough power to run the simulation for a limited period of time, but in order for the program to run continuously it has to be connected to the enhancement module.  The storage cube connects to a slot on the upper side of the module.  The power system activates when the block is pushed into place.

The enhancement module is fitted with enough active memory to allow the simulation to run for an extended period of time, providing Moriarty and the Countess with a lifetime of memories.  Because all the characters involved are computer programs, it has no need for holoprojectors and the entire simulation runs in the computer circuitry.
